What is a partial-discharge-free test transformer?
It is an AC test transformer whose own internal partial discharge level is low enough that it does not mask the discharge signal coming from the equipment under test. It acts as a clean power-frequency high-voltage source, not as a partial discharge measuring instrument.
What is it used for?
It verifies the power-frequency insulation level of insulating materials, insulation structures and finished products, and serves as the PD-free source for withstand and partial discharge tests on transformers, capacitors, HV switches, instrument transformers and surge arresters.
How does this differ from a partial discharge detector?
A partial discharge detector measures the discharge signal of the test object. A partial-discharge-free test transformer supplies the high voltage without contributing measurable discharge of its own. Both are needed in a PD test circuit — they are not substitutes for each other.
