What does an insulation resistance test tell you?
It measures the resistance of the insulation between a conductor and earth at a selected DC voltage. Low or falling values indicate moisture, contamination or ageing. Tracking the reading over time is more informative than a single measurement.
Which equipment is this megohmmeter used on?
Power cables, motor and generator windings, transformers and switchgear, as a first-line preventive and handover test.
Is insulation resistance testing the same as a withstand test?
No. Insulation resistance measurement is non-destructive and diagnostic. A withstand or hipot test stresses the insulation at a much higher voltage to prove it does not break down. The two are complementary, not interchangeable.
